British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands consist of 36 islands and only 16 of them are inhabited. The main islands are Tortola (55 sq.km.), Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke.

The capital Road Town is based on Tortola, which is the largest island where 90 % of population live. There are also main historic sights: Post Office of the XVIII century, Saint Phillip's Church, Governor's Residence, which is now a Public Museum and Grand Fort Charlotte, once the defensive work and prison.

The Arawaks first settled the Virgin Islands about 100 BC. They inhabited the islands till the 15th century when they were displaced by the more aggressive Carib tribes just before Christopher Columbus expedition sailed to the islands. The Spanish landed in 1493 and gave the islands the name of Santa Ursula y la Once Mil Virgenes whose image is on the state flag and a national symbol.
However the Spanish were not going to develop the islands and in 1648 the Dutch established there the first settlements but in 1672 the English captured Tortola, then Anegada and Virgin Corda. The British introduced sugar cane and brought slaves from Africa to work on sugar cane plantations. The islands prospered economically until the middle of the 19th century when sugar cane production fell into decay.

Today tourism is the primary economic activity and the popular destination for tourists from all over the world. Magnificent tropical climate practically the whole year with the exception of rainfall season from September to November, a lot o comfortable bays and harbours with white sandy beaches (total length of coastal line of all islands is about 80 km.), fine reef ecosystem, fascinating underwater inhabitants, unique possibilities for diving and snorkelling, we'll-developed infrastructure and fantastic nature sights provide the best conditions for tourists.
